We video test the 2017 Foton Tunland T3, a thoroughly convincing proposition, handsome and robust,…. with superior build quality, and an impressive array of features.
Here’s a fun Foton fact for you - along with Isuzu, the Chinese manufacturer is one of the only ute manufacturers that also makes trucks.
In fact, they are the only two until Mercedes-Benz gets into the ute game later this year
That puts Foton in pretty convincing company, so it is just as well that the Tunland ute has the goods to back up its place in this group.
The Tunland handsome and robust ute that sets itself above other Chinese offerings in the segment by not only its superior build quality, but also its use of big-name licensed technology.
As such, the Tunland uses a Getrag transmission, Bosch electronics, a Borg Warner transfer case, Dana axles and differentials and, most obviously, a brawny Cummins diesel engine.
With a 2.8-litre capacity, the engine produces 120kW of power and 360Nm of torque. While this is slightly down on other offerings in the ute segment, the Cummins engines spread of torque (from just 1,800rpm) makes it more than useful, and the engine is flexible and willing right across its rev range.
The Tunland is only available with a five-speed manual transmission and while this may be a negative to some, it is a pleasant transmission, with a light clutch and positive take up point that has its ratios nicely spread across the rev range.
The Tunland double cab also comes standard with an impressive array of features, including cruise control, power side mirrors, side steps, daytime running lights, reversing sensors, remote keyless entry, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill hold assist, hill descent control, leather trimmed seats, a leather steering wheels with audio and cruise controls and a three year 100,000km warranty with three years roadside assist.
The Tunland also comes fully loaded with the expected safety features, including ESC, brake force distribution, traction control and dual front airbags.
The new interior is modern and well laid out and the top spec double cab 4WD model you see here lands at just $36,990 plus on road costs, making it a thoroughly convincing proposition.
