2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross PHEV VRX

New models, Video Road Report

Mitsubishi sure played its cards close with the release of the Eclipse Cross PHEV! To date, Mitsubishi’s hybrid hero has been the Outlander; a very popular model but Mitsubishi clearly felt it needed another hybrid hero – enter the Eclipse Cross MkII. Cleaner in design, more refined in its ride and handling, the new generation Eclipse Cross gives drivers the best of both worlds.

The battery / twin electric motor power gives you a purely electric range of about 55kms and then petrol power from the 94kW / 199Nm, 2.4-litre MIVEC engine makes up the remainder of an estimated 650km range total. With the shared motive power, the Eclipse Cross PHEV claims a 1.9 litre per 100km fuel consumption figure for 43gm/km of CO2 emitted – very frugal figures and very eco-friendly.

Does this mean you are short-changed in any other aspect? Not at all, quite the contrary in fact.

The Eclipse Cross incorporates Super All Wheel Control – an enhanced form of 4WD to underscore the five-star ANCAP safety rating, the result of Mitsubishi’s comprehensive list of safety features for the Eclipse Cross. Inside, the second-generation Eclipse Cross retains Mitsubishi’s ‘sophisticated and practical’ interior, with features like heated front and rear leather seats, 8-inch touchscreen with Mitsubishi’s SDA2 system including Android Auto and Apple Carplay and Bluetooth connectivity, opening dual sunroof, folding and heated power mirrors, electrically assisted tailgate, dual zone climate control and more.

Something new from Mitsubishi and specific to the Eclipse Cross, is the Mitsubishi Remote app which allows pre-setting of the vehicle’s air conditioning, remote locking, and lighting check and perhaps most critically, scheduling charging to an off-peak time period or setting a fixed duration for charging convenience.

Classier, more connected, and more considerate of both the environment and the needs of a family SUV, the Eclipse Cross PHEV ticks all the boxes and is, of course, covered by Mitsubishi’s Diamond 10-year warranty.
