The new generation Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV looks set to keep the Triple Diamond brand well ahead of the pack, continuing the model’s long standing, top selling SUV in segment status. Mitsubishi has extended the electric range of the PHEV out to 84km through improvements to both the front and rear electric motors and an enhanced and larger battery, all of which contributes to a very composed and assured drive experience.
Outlander PHEV now offers seating for five or seven, with flat folding seat capability to give a cavernous boot space when only five seats are required. Front seats have also seen an upgrade with heating, 8-way adjustment and memory positioning for both driver and passenger. The PHEV’s conventional 2.4-litre petrol engine and fuel tank have also seen significant upgrades, increasing the combined EV and ICE range to around 750kms – no range anxiety here! – with a Mitsubishi-posted fuel consumption figure of 1.6 litres per 100km.
Quality has been upgraded too, with inclusion of a 9-speaker Bose audio system, panoramic sunroof, while multi-tactile surfaces deliver a premium feel to the technology-packed cabin. The 12.3-inch digital driver’s screen delivers a vast amount of information via an array of innovative displays, supplemented by a 10.8-inch heads up display and the advanced 9-inch Smartphone Display Audio screen. This now integrates PHEV data as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and 3D satellite navigation integration. The multi-around view monitoring camera views are also displayed here.
Other upgrades include the addition of new functionality in the multi-terrain Drive Selector system, which now features a PHEV exclusive POWER setting for a more engaging driving experience. Mitsubishi’s renowned Super All Wheel Control system has also been modified for PHEV application. The Outlander PHEV has an enhanced driver activated energy management system, allowing for selectable normal hybrid use, EV only use, battery saving and/or charging functionality. Alongside this is the single pedal operation mode, which can be selected to optimise acceleration and increased regenerative braking capability using the accelerator pedal only.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in VRX spec’ is – without qualification or hesitation – the flagship vehicle for the brand in 2022 and comes with Mitsubishi’s 10/5-year Diamond Advantage warranty with an 8- year or 160,000km battery warranty and a $5750 clean car rebate.
