With the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill now an Act; it’s time for organisations to develop and implement climate change policies that contribute to global efforts under the Paris Agreement. New Zealand has committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. With this, the government has announced that the state sector will convert their fleet to 100 percent electric on their journey to carbon neutral 2025.
With Transport around 22 percent of net emissions and 90 percent of transport emissions from road transport, we need a strategic, climate resilient transport network that will reduce environmental impact.

Decarbonisation of New Zealand’s Transport
Discussing the present and the future of electric vehicles and sustainable transport, the Hon Michael Woods, Minister for Transport, will give an address on the decarbonising movement in New Zealand at eworld’s Electric Vehicles and Sustainable Transport Conference (6-7 May).
He will share what is in the pipeline for the public transport system and explore the plans for a transition to a multimodal electrified transportation system.
Growing EV fleet in New Zealand
The eworld event is in its fourth year and is the only event in New Zealand featuring both trade and public elements with a large expo showcasing electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and a wider spectrum of electro-mobility and associated sustainable technologies for the home and consumer.
The event serves as a focal point to grow the EV fleet in New Zealand and drive toward a more sustainable transport environment for New Zealand’s future fleets. The two-day conference has been designed to focus on two key factors important for New Zealand. With the theme of Decarbonising New Zealand’s transport system, the first day of the conference will focus on climate change and the second on transitioning to an electric fleet with ease.
EV fleet supply and demand
The need for electrification of New Zealand’s fleet will be discussed in detail starting off with International Keynote Christina Bu, Secretary General of the Norwegian EV Association.
Her livestreamed session will share the insights on Norway’s success and how they have addressed key issues such as the challenges of supply and demand for implementation.
A motor industry panel will give an outlook on the vehicles in New Zealand.
The panel will discuss the current supply of EVs in New Zealand and any impacts the global pandemic has for NZ, particularly with what can be available in the next 12-18 months.
Incentivising the adoption and purchase of electric vehicles will be discussed along with the Government’s fleet role.
When it comes to ‘Greening the Government fleet’, a panel from EECA will discuss the work that has been going on in the State Sector and what can be expected going forward. In 2020 it was pledged that all of Government would transition to an electric fleet; a fleet which currently comprises 16,000 vehicles of which only 100 are electric. There have been pilot programmes Government departments have undertaken – and results will be shared, along with challenges faced, and the solutions implemented.
Previous attendees on the industry trade day have included central and local government, OEMs and EV importers, energy generation and distribution companies, large fleet owners/managers and suppliers to the sector as well as corporates committing to electric vehicle uptake.
Complementing the expo are the free trade and public day sessions that provide short, sharp insights into the different elements of owning an EV.
Trade day sessions will focus on the different elements when transitioning to an electric fleet.
Five dedicated zones at eworld expo
The eworld expo is multi-faceted and a key event for suppliers to showcase the growing EV and electro-mobility market. Five zones will be within the expo: emobility, ebike, evs, ehome and escooter offering a suite of products and services for this sector. Past event survey has recorded 51 percent attendees have purchase intentions.
