EV of the Year 2024 - BYD Sealion 6

News

The BYD Sealion 6 has been crowned Company Vehicle’s “EV of the Year 2024,” capturing the automotive spotlight with its cutting-edge design, impressive ‘super’ hybrid technology, and smart technology.

Known to Kiwi’s for its fully electric vehicles, the brand has ventured into new territory with the Sealion 6, BYD’s first plug-in hybrid, showcasing the company’s commitment to broadening its horizons and meeting diverse consumer needs.

Available in both Dynamic (2WD) and Premium (AWD) configurations, the Sealion sets a new standard for medium-sized PHEV SUVs. Equipped with an intelligent DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligence) powertrain, the Sealion 6 features a 1.5-litre engine (with or without a turbo) paired with an 18.3 kWh battery and twin electric motors. This combination delivers up to  238 kW and 550 Nm of torque.

It offers a remarkable electric-only range of approximately 90 kilometres, and when combined with the petrol engine, drivers can enjoy nearly 1,000 kilometres of range, thus alleviating range anxiety. Furthermore, the Sealion’s ability to DC fast charge and its Vehicle to Load (V2L) capability, which allows it to power appliances on the go, underscores its versatility. Fuel efficiency is another highlight, with an average of 5.9l/100km in hybrid mode and minimal emissions of 32 g/km, making it an environmentally-conscious choice.

The exterior of the BYD Sealion 6 may not (thankfully) evoke images of its aquatic namesake, but with its sleek, confident design and distinctive whisker-like air intakes, it commands attention on the road. While inside, the Sealion 6 continues to impress with a spacious interior and generous cargo capacity of 425 litres.

The luxurious cabin offers plush seating and ample support for all passengers, complemented by a panoramic sunroof that bathes the interior in natural light. Practicality is paramount, with numerous storage solutions such as wireless charging ports and large door pockets ensuring everything has its place.

Technology and safety are at the forefront of the Sealion’s design. The cabin is dominated by a large, customizable touchscreen capable of landscape and portrait orientations, perfect for navigation, media control, and even karaoke sessions during charging station waits. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are seamlessly integrated, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system to enhance safety and convenience without overwhelming the driver. Additionally, NFC technology allows owners to unlock and start the vehicle with their smartphones, offering a truly modern, keyless experience.

The BYD Sealion’s design, innovative technology, and above all, its smart PHEV powertrain all combined to earn it the Company Vehicle “EV of the Year 2024” accolade, a big congratulations from us all here.
