Introducing the all-new third generation Honda HR-V

New models

Since its debut in 1988 (1989 in New Zealand), the Hi-Rider Revolutionary Vehicle – better known as the HR-V – has held a steadfast place in Honda’s lineup, celebrated for its fuel efficiency, roomy interior, and enjoyable driving dynamics. After a brief hiatus of 2.5 years, we’re excited to welcome back the HR-V, now sporting fresh styling, an enhanced ride experience, and an impressive e:HEV hybrid powertrain.

While the third generation was initially unveiled in 2021, Honda NZ was excited to present this updated all-new 3.5 generation HR-V model, and rest assured, it’s been worth the wait. Plus, New Zealand is among the first countries to roll it out!

This latest HR-V iteration brings a wealth of upgrades designed to elevate your driving experience. With improved dynamics, cutting-edge safety features, and enhanced practicality, Honda has meticulously crafted a vehicle that caters to the modern driver’s preferences.

Embodying the philosophy of “expand your life,” the new HR-V emphasises practicality, sophistication, and versatility. Its exterior design showcases sleek lines, aerodynamic elegance, and a premium aesthetic, affirming Honda’s commitment to creating a standout vehicle in its class.

In terms of dimensions, the new HR-V closely mirrors its predecessor, with one notable change: a purposeful narrowing in width. This reworking gives the wheels a more prominent look and contributes to a confident, assertive stance. Meanwhile, the rear boasts a stylish fastback appearance, complete with updated LED tail lights.

Inside the HR-V, you’ll find an interior that echoes the stylish simplicity of its exterior. The premium materials create a comfortable environment for both driver and passengers. A notable design choice is the rear seating configuration, which accommodates two passengers with plenty of head and shoulder room, transforming the backseat into a cozy lounge experience.

The journey north from Palmerston North to Taupo was designed to put the new HR-V through its paces.

The new HR-V features an efficient e:HEV-only powertrain, boasting a seamless 1.5L, two motor hybrid system (78kW/127Nm ICE and 96kW/253Nm electric motor) paired with an e-CVT Electronic Control Continuously Variable Transmission. This combination achieves an impressive fuel economy of 4.3L/100km, emitting just 98g/km. The performance is more than exhilarating; on those quiet country roads, the HR-V proved to be a delightful companion.

With three driving modes – ECO, Normal, and Sport  – and paddle shifters for adjusting brake regeneration, navigating corners became effortless. Plus, with improved visibility through the windscreen, I was able to soak up the New Zealand countryside as it sped by.

The body structure has been strengthened with 15 percent more high-tensile steel, resulting in a remarkable 20 percent increase in lateral rigidity and a 15 percent enhancement in torsional strength. Combined with improved suspension and agile handling, the new HR-V navigated the slippery, winding roads with impressive agility. Cabin noise and vibrations have been significantly reduced, thanks to acoustic front glass and innovative foam fillers, ensuring a serene driving environment even on rough terrains.

Safety features in the Honda Sensing suite have been upgraded as well, now including adaptive cruise control, collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, and cross-traffic alerts. However, the absence of a driver monitoring system has led to a four-star ANCAP rating.

The HR-V truly shines in utility with its clever features like Magic Seats, which provide versatile cargo options. Enjoy the comfort of an air diffusion system that prevents direct airflow annoyance, along with a hands-free power tailgate that conveniently closes when you walk away. Plus, the integration of the Honda Connect app allows for remote climate control access, vehicle tracking, and safety alerts, adding a new level of convenience to your driving experience.

With over 600km of stunning New Zealand roads under our belts, the launch drive of Honda’s new HR-V was nothing short of remarkable. Even on challenging stretches where we pushed the SUV’s limits, the HR-V delivered a seamless performance. Known for its fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and engaging handling, this new iteration truly exceeds expectations.
