Kia EV3 – the Niro EV replacement
Kia has officially unveiled the all-new EV3, an all-electric small SUV designed to bring cutting-edge EV technology to a wider audience. Positioned below the flagship EV6 and EV9 models, the EV3 introduces a compelling blend of range, performance, and premium features at an accessible price point. With three trim levels – Light, Earth, and GT-Line – the EV3 is tailored to cater to various driving needs while maintaining Kia’s signature focus on design, technology, and sustainability.
The Kia EV3 incorporates the brand’s latest design philosophy, featuring the distinctive Kia Star Map lighting and Tiger Face family elements. The GT-Line model further enhances the aesthetic appeal with bold diagonal lighting elements and a sportier black lower grille. The aerodynamic side profile, complete with dynamic loop lines, flush front door handles, and hidden rear door handles, ensures a sleek and modern look.
At the rear, the EV3 continues its design synergy with the front, utilis ing further Star Map lighting elements and a seamless flow of the black window frames from the C-pillar to the rear window. Trim-specific alloy wheel designs range from 17-inch wheels on the Light trim to 19-inch wheels for the Earth and GT-Line variants, complementing the high-tech and compact aesthetic.
Kia has applied a ‘home-like’ theme to the EV3’s interior, emphasising minimalistic yet premium details with soft-touch materials. The cabin is centered around three high-resolution displays: a 12.3-inch Digital Driver Cluster, a five-inch Climate Monitor, and a 12.3-inch Touch Screen Infotainment system featuring Kia’s latest GUI. The interior layout optimises comfort and space, benefiting from the E-GMP platform’s efficient packaging to provide generous legroom, shoulder room, and headroom.
Cargo capacity is another standout feature, offering a spacious 460L VDA rear compartment, complemented by a 25L VDA front storage compartment. The EV3 is available in six exterior colors and two-tone interior options, with cloth upholstery in the Light trim and artificial leather in the Earth and GT-Line models.
The EV3 boasts a suite of advanced technologies designed to enhance convenience, connectivity, and driving efficiency. Across the line-up, standard features include Kia Connect, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing the EV3 to serve as a portable power source. The Earth and GT-Line trims add wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration and wireless phone charging.
For those seeking a premium experience, the GT-Line trim is equipped with exclusive features such as a GT-Line exterior and interior treatment, black alloy wheels, a Smart Power Tailgate, and an eight-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system.
The Kia EV3 is available with two battery configurations:
• The Standard Range model features a 58.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering an estimated WLTP range of 436 km.
• The Long Range model steps up to an 81.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, offering a class-leading WLTP range of 605 km in the Light trim, while the more feature-laden Earth and GT-Line versions achieve 563 km.
To optimise efficiency, the EV3 debuts the new iPedal 3.0 adjustable regenerative braking system. This technology enables customisable one-pedal driving, retaining settings even after the vehicle is restarted and functioning in reverse as well.
So how does it drive?
Kia has engineered the EV3 to deliver a confident and composed driving experience, with extensive testing to fine-tune its handling for New Zealand road conditions. A key innovation is the introduction of Frequency Selective Dampers (FSD), a passive suspension system that enhances both ride comfort and handling stability. Borrowing from the EV9, this advanced damping technology ensures that the EV3 remains responsive while minimising body roll through corners.
Aerodynamics also play a crucial role in the EV3’s efficiency and driving dynamics. The model features an underbody coverage ratio of 79.1 percent – one of the highest in Kia’s line-up – reducing drag and optimising range. Additionally, a 10mm difference between the front and rear track widths has been implemented to minimise vortex drag at the rear, further improving stability and efficiency.
Kia has prioritised safety in the EV3, equipping it with a comprehensive suite of active and passive safety features. All trims come standard with Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) and a centre-side airbag. The EV3 is expected to achieve a five-star safety rating, reinforcing its status as a leader in its segment.
The Kia EV3 sets a new benchmark for small electric SUVs, combining impressive range, cutting-edge technology, and premium features at an accessible price point. With its thoughtful design, advanced powertrain options, and extensive safety and connectivity features, the EV3 is poised to be a game-changer in the New Zealand EV market.
